Following  successful  performances of The Asphodel Fields, writer and director Jack Whitewood reports:
'The Asphodel Fields', a full length experimental drama charting the story of a woman with dementia, was performed by Invent Theatre in May 2008 at Shanklin Theatre.
The production was the first to be performed under the 'Invent Theatre' title and was performed, produced and managed entirely by young people. For photographs of the performance have a look at our gallery or visit our blog.
The name of the play relates to the name of a book, that acts as the centre piece of the story. The term ‘Asphodel’ is Greek, and was a mythical location for the souls of those unable to reach the Elysian Fields (Heaven) or the underworld (Hell). It was believed to be a great meadow, that never ended and was home to many who were caught between life and death. In this production the term is used to describe a character’s situation and, in effect, used to describe the feeling of imagination, between reality and dreams.
The tale of a book, and of how it can change lives, ’The Asphodel Fields’ is the tale of a woman who discovers, through time and the power of a book, the influence of imagination and its ability to set people free.
